DESCRIPTION
Transformer oils or
insulating oils are usually a highly-refined mineral oil that is stable at high
temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating properties. The functions
of these oils are to insulate, supress corona and arcing as well as to serve as
a coolant.
APPLICATION
Transformer oil is used in:
§ oil-filled
transformers,
some types of
high voltage capacitors,
§ fluorescent
lamp ballasts of high voltage switches
§
and circuit
breakers.
BENEFITS
§ Transformer oils helps cool the transformer.
§ Transformer oils must remain stable at high temperatures
for an extended period because it also provides part of the electrical
insulation between internal live parts.
§ The oil-filled tank may have external radiators through
which the oil circulates by natural convection to improve cooling of large
power transformers.
